“I see people, I talk to them, I listen to them, and I show them that I know how to manage money. I build a relationship
from scratch and develop it, the old school way." - Pete Mahurin
Pete joined the financial services industry in a unique way, a path not taken by most advisors. He graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and went on to teach high school math and physics. In September of 1967, Pete wrote a most unique, unsolicited letter to Mr. Ken Moore of Hilliard Lyons requesting his consideration for employment with the firm. Not long after, Pete was hired, and his long, successful career with Hilliard Lyons and Baird began. Click here to read his letter for employment.
Pete wasn’t just an excellent financial advisor; he also owned banks, served on boards of major companies, and had a philanthropic spirit like no other, allowing him and his wife, Dixie, to support numerous individuals and charitable organizations. Western Kentucky University is one organization that has benefitted from the Mahurin's generosity over the years with donations supporting athletics, an endowed professorship in Gifted Studies, and the Mahurin Honors College, among others. Many other recipients, too many to name, have been positively impacted and changed forever by the Mahurin’s benevolence.
Although Pete never sought recognition, he was admired and respected by many and received a host of well-deserved honors throughout his lifetime for his professional and philanthropic endeavors. He was also known for timely “words of wisdom” he would often impart to his co-workers or colleagues as he deemed fit based on any given situation. One of our favorites was a 2019 speech to the Bowling Green Noon Rotary Club where Pete compared life to a basketball game. He spoke of the importance of not giving up at halftime or the third quarter but being sure to play all four quarters of life. Pete took his own advice, and absolutely played all four quarters, and even into overtime.
In an interview, Pete once described his simple mission of providing sound financial advice to clients this way: “I see them, I talk to them, I listen to them, and I show them how to manage money. I build a relationship from scratch and develop it, the old school way.” We are grateful for this and the many other lessons we learned under Pete Mahurin’s guidance, and we are proud to carry on his mission going forward.
Bob Kirby
On January 1, 1994, after a long career in banking, Bob Kirby came to work at Hilliard Lyons. He agreed to a four-year contract with Pete and Shannon which would allow him to continue working until he turned 65. This four-year contract turned into 27 years of loyal service. Bob retired on December 31, 2020, and during his time here was a role model like no other in both his personal and professional life.
